From concert posters to record albums, phonographs to digital music players, handheld radios to sound systems, Art of Noise takes visitors on an exploration of how design has transformed our relationship to music over the past 100 years. Join us to learn more about this groundbreaking exhibition with a special introductory conversation with Joseph Becker, curator of architecture and design at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and Gary Hustwit, a documentary filmmaker known for his work addressing design and music.
Becker and Hustwit will reveal insights into the history and making of the exhibition, which travels to Cooper Hewitt from SFMOMA. At Cooper Hewitt, Art of Noise will feature more than 300 objects drawn largely from the collections of Cooper Hewitt and SFMOMA, as well as unique sound environments designed by Stockholm-based studio teenage engineering and multi-disciplinary artist Devon Turnbull.
After the talk, the audience will be invited to explore the exhibition and celebrate the opening!
Filmmaker Gary Hustwit joins the 2026 Sundance Film Festival Story Forum for a conversation on art, innovation, and experimentation in the age of AI. Hustwit directed Eno, a 2024 documentary that employed generative technology to create a unique cut of the film for each screening. The film premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, went on to receive six nominations from Cinema Eye Honors, and was shortlisted for an Academy Award. In this conversation moderated by KD Daza, Hustwit will discuss how he conceptualized and created the film, the challenges of incorporating bespoke tech into his filmmaking practice, and his predictions on the future intersections of film and technology.

WORLD PREMIERE. Unfolding in real time, this new generative cinema work by Anamorph (Brendan Dawes and Gary Hustwit) transforms the surreal universe of David Lynch’s "Mulholland Drive" into an endless, living experience. Drawing on the film’s ethereal atmosphere and shifting identities, the piece continually reconfigures fragments of image, sound, and music into a hypnotic stream of evolving forms. Rather than a retelling, it is a perpetual cinematic hallucination, a dream taking shape as it disappears. EVIL LANDLORD HUM will premiere as a 36-hour experience at Offline Gallery in NYC. It will start during an opening reception on November 14th, 6pm to 9pm and then continue through midnight November 15th. Admission is free and the gallery will be open for 36 hours straight, all day and night. More performances announced soon.
